Sports Facilities in Hammersmith

Hammersmith is an area bustling with crowded shopping centres, offices and a busy transport hub.  Just a turn away from the clamour of the high streets is a beautiful peaceful riverside, quaint parks and cosy village streets.  The area’s juxtaposing forces of the crowded, cosmopolitan centre and the relieving open pockets of nature and rural qualities are just some of the reasons that so many people flock to the West London district.  When it comes to sport in the vicinity, the region certainly benefits from some great facilities, clubs and academies, whilst Ravenscourt Park allows sports players to benefit from the area’s natural open spaces.

Hammersmith Academy has some excellent sports facilities open for hire to the general public.  At the venue, there is a floodlit fenced astroturf for five-a-side play, a 250m running track, a fully equipped fitness centre and to round up the rest of your sporting needs is a four court sports hall allowing for badminton, football, basketball and volleyball.

Ealing, Hammersmith and West London College provides fantastic youth programmes such as their 16-19 Basketball Academy; where players are given personalised development plans from experienced coaches, the Boxing Academy; one of only two established youth boxing schools in London, and the Football Academy; offering elite-level training from professional coaches.  Entry to each of the programmes is through application and trials.

Ravenscourt Park is a stunning green-flag park, evocative of a secret garden, but a garden that features eleven-a-side and five-a-side football pitches, both with 3G astroturf surfaces.  They are priced at £80 and £40 respectively for an hour’s play.   Also, in the park is a macadam netball court and a macadam basketball court.  Facilities can be booked by emailing sportsbookings@lbhf.gov.uk or by phoning 020 3772 8260.  The park contains 7 outdoor tennis courts made of hard macadam and has changing rooms nearby.  They can be booked by phoning 0207 602 2226.  In the summer, you can make use of the park’s bowling green and paddling pool.

Perfect your squash play at the Hammersmith Fitness and Squash Centre, where there are 3 highly in demand courts.  You can book up to 6 days in advance via the GLL website.  The centre also offers coaching and league sessions.  Enquire at reception for details.  There is also a fully equipped gym, with qualified personal trainers and fitness studios hosting dance and exercise classes.

Charing Cross Sports Club in Hammersmith is the home to the Hammersmith and Fulham School of Gymnastics.  Children’s classes are run by the Britain’s Got Talent winner Alex Uttley of “Spellbound” and occur every Sunday.  They are available for 4-6 year olds, 7-9 year olds and 10 plus.  There are also adult classes available for people who are new to gymnastics and keen to master a few tricks, and those who wish to rekindle an old hobby.  Contact the school on 077 81193705 or info@hfschoolofgymnastics.com.

Hammersmith and Fulham Rugby Club caters to all ages, all stages and all sexes.  There are 5 men’s teams, 2 ladies’ teams and a Vets team, which allow players between the ages of 35 to 63 to carry on with the game without having to face 22 year olds on the pitch.  The club has a thriving youth and mini rugby department and is actively seeking new boys and girls to join their teams of “Hammers”.  Kids can start with the club from the age of 5 by joining the Little Hammers programme.  Kids then progress to the Under 7s and work their way right up to Under 17s.  A yearly subscription to the club is £100 for adults and youths, £40 for students and £35 for Vets.  You can join by simply arriving 10 minutes before a session and filling out a registration form.
