Premiership Football Pitch Sizes 2014 to 2015

Official Football Pitch Dimensions - Width and Length A common misconception is that football pitch sizes must always be the same. This is simply not truth as it varies across all levels of the game whether on your local playing field or throughout the English Premier League and beyond. At grassroots level, football pitch dimensions are about as predictable as Mario Ballotelli. One week you could find yourself wedged in to someone's front lawn with a vertical slope, the week after roaming the African Savannah. Football pitch size consistency is certainly neither required nor expected and it certainly effects the gameplay. Managers such as Mauricio Pochettino have even gone as far to say that it has adversely effected their tactics and team ethos, whether that is just an excuse or not remains to be seen. So one of life's conundrums is, what is the correct football pitch size and how does it vary? Well as shown by the hand drawn diagram (see top right), the actual football pitch length can vary enormously from 100 yards (91.44m) to 130 yards (118.9m). Furthermore the width of a football pitch can vary enormously, sometimes by as much as 100% from just 50 yards (45.7m) to 100 yards (91.44m). Football Pitch Size Recommendations for Width and Length. So if you think that Tottenham's pitch at White Hart Lane appears to be small and must need your eyes testing, think again as your eyes might be fine. Sizes of Premiership football pitches do differ, but not by as much as you might think. Is there then an overlap between the success of the team and the pitch size? Mauricio Pochettino thinks so..we'll let you decide.

Perhaps the difference is hardly worth batting an eyelid for and currently there is little correlation between league position and pitch size. If there was, we might see Southampton riding high and Liverpool and Manchester United riding low. Oh hang on a minute... By Sam Parton
